I caught this shot of The Casualties during a last-minute backyard show in East Los Angeles back in 2016. If you know anything about the East LA scene, you know these underground gigs are pure, beautiful chaos. Word of mouth got out fast that morning, and by the time the band stepped up, the yard was packed wall-to-wall with kids completely losing their minds.
I managed to get right up front to capture original vocalist Jorge Herrera and guitarist Jake Casualty as they were tearing through their set. The atmosphere in that yard was heavy and unrelenting; just raw street punk exactly the way it was meant to be experienced.
Of course, a gig like this was a ticking clock. Just as the energy hit a total boiling point, the cops rolled up and shut the entire thing down. But walking away with this shot made the madness worth it. Capturing that fleeting moment of underground history right before it got busted is exactly why I do this.
For anyone who grew up on The Casualties or spent their weekends hunting down addresses for backyard gigs, this print locks in a piece of real, unpolished punk rock history.
