I shot this frame of Tower Bridge on a summer night in June 2022, right at the tail end of a grueling 70-day tour shooting with Ignite, Ho99o9, NOFX, and Pennywise across Europe and the US. I only had a 48-hour window in London and was running completely on fumes. On my final night in the city, I grabbed pizza in Camden with fellow photographer Nick Sayers, tracked down some Fred Perry gear, and then headed back to get my camera equipment. I parked a rental Lime bike on the side of the bridge, set up my tripod right on the edge of the street traffic, and pulled off this shot just hours before catching my flight back to California.

The goal wasn’t just to shoot a standard postcard landmark, but to show the actual pace of the city. By utilizing a long exposure, the constant movement of London buses and cars turns into clean, abstract light streams slicing directly beneath the massive, historic stone architecture. It creates a stark visual contrast between the stillness of the century-old bridge structure and the fast, fleeting motion of modern night traffic over the River Thames.

Designed by Sir Horace Jones and engineered by John Wolfe Barry, Tower Bridge has anchored the London skyline since its official opening on June 30, 1894. Built to ease foot and vehicle traffic for the millions living in the East End, it remains a vital artery of the city, handling over 40,000 crossings every day. Its massive bascules, which still raise to allow river vessels to pass, were converted from their original steam-powered hydraulic mechanisms to a modern electro-hydraulic system in 1972.
