Item Description
Walking through the neighborhood of Lyon Park in Arlington, Virginia, you might not even notice the modest red bungalow at 2706 4th St N. Its fading paint and yard blend right into the suburban surroundings, but this house is anything but ordinary. Known as the Dischord House, this unassuming home served as the epicenter of the D.C. hardcore punk scene, where Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson launched Dischord Records back in 1981.
Meeting Ian MacKaye and capturing this photo at the Dischord House was a remarkable experience. Ian greeted us warmly, and as we went through the house, it felt like stepping straight into a living history book. Upstairs, Ian showed us his childhood bedroom, where we listened to early Bad Brains demos; a moment that made the historical weight of this space feel entirely immediate.
The Dischord House was far more than just a home; it operated as a headquarters, a practice space, and a constant hub for creative output. Its basement, cramped and packed with instruments and amps, was where foundational bands like Minor Threat, State of Alert, and Fugazi rehearsed. The upstairs rooms were filled with meticulously organized archives of records, fan letters, and the original master copies of Dischord’s entire catalog.
What struck me most during the visit was how completely the house embodied the uncompromising DIY ethos that defined the early hardcore scene. From hand-drawn album artwork to vinyl releases assembled by hand at kitchen tables, everything about Dischord was centered on community, independent creativity, and a strict resistance to commercialization.
The house itself holds an iconic status in underground music history. Its front porch, famously featured on the cover of Minor Threat’s Salad Days EP, has become a major destination for people from all over the world. This image stands as a permanent record of that space, and it is also proudly displayed as part of the Washington, D.C. installation at the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas, NV.
