I shot this on a crystal-clear morning just off the reef outside Nāpili Kai Beach Resort in Lahaina, Hawaii. The waves were perfect that day; they were clean, barreling, and catching just the right amount of morning light as they curled over the shallow reef. It is the exact kind of wave wave-riders look for and ocean photographers wait patiently to capture.

As I waded out to find the right angle, I noticed Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) gliding beneath the surface. Just next door to this spot is Turtle Beach, a natural haven for these creatures. Moving effortlessly in the turquoise water, they seemed completely unfazed by the breaking surf. Sharing the lineup with them added a unique depth to the session.

Nāpili Kai Beach Resort is a distinct landmark on Maui’s western coastline, known for its stunning natural geography. The reef here creates precise, hollow barrels while supporting a vibrant marine ecosystem just below the swell.
