This photo of Jerry Only and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein captures a rare, candid moment backstage after their reunion performance at Riot Fest in Chicago, IL, on September 18, 2016. Just before I snapped this shot, Jerry and Doyle turned to me and said, “This one’s for mom.” That simple, honest sentiment added real weight to the frame; it was about more than just the music, it was family.
After the festival, I sent a copy of this photo over to Doyle so he could pass it along to their mother. Knowing it became a part of their own family history makes this specific capture stand out to me. It is a solid reminder that behind the massive scale of a high-profile punk reunion, the actual foundation is just a family dynamic.
The Chicago date marked only the second time Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only, and Doyle reunited on stage since 1983, backed by Dave Lombardo on drums and Acey Slade on guitar. The atmosphere across Douglas Park was completely electric, with thousands locking into the Misfits’ classic catalog.
