This shot of Greg Ginn and Mike Vallely was taken at the SST Records warehouse in Taylor, TX, back in 2013. We were shooting promo photos for a Thrasher Magazine ad to promote the Good For You album, “Life Is Too Short to Not Hold a Grudge.” The entire warehouse was lined with rows of classic SST records, making it a great backdrop for a collaborative session.
Downstairs, both Black Flag and Good For You were actively working on new music. Mike was recording his tracks for Good For You at the same time Ron Reyes was laying down vocals for the Black Flag tracks. Everyone was staying on-site at the warehouse, which gave the whole experience that classic, no-nonsense DIY SST vibe. This photo ended up being featured in the band’s Too! double LP and the Full Serving CD, both of which I designed.
Greg Ginn was handling the tracking and running SST, while Mike, who would later front Black Flag, was focused on his parts for the Good For You project.
Ultimately, this photo captures a straightforward moment of creative collaboration, documenting them working together in a space defined by the label’s history, right before the next decade-plus of shows these two would go on to play together.
