When I shot this frame, I was thinking about the opening sequence of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It is that winter scene where Joel suddenly skips his morning commute and boards a train out to Montauk on a total whim. He has no idea why he is doing it, or why he feels this sudden, desperate urge to walk along a freezing, empty beach in February.
Walking onto that exact stretch of sand, it was impossible not to hear Joel’s introspective monologue echoing in my head: “Sand is overrated. It’s just tiny little rocks.”
This freezing shore is where he looks out into the gray distance and spots Clementine walking toward him. They are both wandering around completely lost, cold, and entirely unaware that their subconscious minds are pulling them right back to the exact place they belong.
Standing out there myself, feeling that same biting wind and looking at the vast, gray Atlantic ocean, gave the movie a completely different dimension. It turned a beautiful story on a screen into a tangible, living memory. I wanted to capture the quiet, isolated mood of that winter day, where an ordinary stretch of frozen sand feels like it is holding onto the weight of an entire universe. If that film means something to you, this print is a clean, minimalist visual of the exact spot where their story restarts.
