Item Description
I’ve photographed a lot of chaotic shows, but At The Drive-In brings a completely different level of raw energy. Formed in El Paso, Texas, in 1994, they built a massive reputation on explosive live performances, blending intense post-hardcore with punk, prog, and Latin influences. Cedric Bixler-Zavala is a total force of nature on stage, flailing, jumping, and twisting like a hurricane while still delivering his vocals with precision. Shooting this set felt like trying to capture a lightning strike in slow motion.
I caught this frame at the perfect moment, arms wide open, mid-motion, fully immersed in the performance. The band was entirely locked in that night, with Omar Rodríguez-López’s wild guitar playing pushing every song to the edge of collapse, Paul Hinojos and Tony Hajjar anchoring the rhythm, and Keeley Davis adding his own fire to the mix. Every note felt heavy, and the crowd absolutely fed off the stage energy.
I drove down for this show after connecting with Cedric online over a shared love for 90s skateboarding and Street Plant, where I worked for ten years. He put me on the guestlist, and I ended up heading backstage after their set. Years later, I realized that backstage area was the exact same room featured in the movie Almost Famous where William Miller meets Stillwater at the sports arena, which was a wild realization. At The Drive-In was opening for System of a Down that night, but for me, it was strictly an ATDI show. I packed up my gear and left right after talking with the band; because, well, “You Wanted To!!”
Their reunion run brought back everything that made them an essential live act; unpredictability, intensity, and a sense that anything could happen at any second. This print captures that exact live presence in a single wide frame.
