Capture a piece of skateboarding history with this stunning wall art print of Mike Vallely and Mark Gonzales at the iconic Brooklyn Banks in 2017. As a photographer, I had the unique opportunity to witness and immortalize this legendary session where two of the most influential skateboarders reunited at one of New York City's most famed skate spots.
The Brooklyn Banks, designed by M. Paul Friedberg and constructed in 1972, has been a skateboarding mecca since the mid-1980s. Located in Manhattan, not Brooklyn as the name suggests, the Banks became the epicenter of NYC skateboarding culture. From the small banks between Park Row and Rose Street to the big banks between Rose and Pearl Streets, the area offered a diverse array of skateable features like granite ledges, various height wallrides, a nine-stair rail, and the infamous big 13-stair rails.
Mike Vallely and Mark Gonzales, both legends of the skateboarding world, have had a profound impact on the sport. In the 1990s, they pushed the boundaries of what was possible on a skateboard. Their styles, tricks, and fearless approaches set new standards and inspired countless skaters worldwide. In 2017, these two icons came together once again to skate the Brooklyn Banks, creating a moment that was both nostalgic and exhilarating. This session was notably featured in a Thrasher Magazine retrospective of the Brooklyn Banks.
"In 2017 I skated there with Mark Gonzales for some double actions in the rain. It may be my favorite moment ever skating there, or in skating period." —Mike Vallely
